Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert closes grumpygamer blog

The Grumpygamer blog ran by game developer Rob Gilbert has now closed after a spate of comments surrounding the new Monkey Island game.

Monkey Island creator and legendary game developer Ron Gilbert has shut down his blog, grumpygamer, in response to an influx of negative comments over the art style and direction of his new Monkey Island game.

The blog had been running since 2006, usually featuring comments and thoughts from Gilbert about his games and the wider industry.

In a comment shortly before the website was taken down, Gilbert said that “I’m shutting down comments. People are just being mean and I’m having to delete personal attack comments.

“It’s an amazing game and everyone on the team is very proud of it. Play it or don’t play it but don’t ruin it for everyone else. I won’t be posting anymore about the game.

“The joy of sharing has been driven from me.”

11 versions of the page that hosted the new Monkey Island trailer can be found on the WayBackMachine, though which comments of the more than 200 earned Gilbert’s ire isn’t clear.

Several direct displeasure at the development team, the art style of the new game, and at Gilbert. There are also several talking about ‘leftist politics’ and other nonsense.

“This game is going to fail so hard.” says one. “Godamn [sic] no-taste cuck” reads another, for some reason. Another claims the art is deliberately bad for “the controversy.”

There are many more along similar lines, either insulting the game’s art style or “leftist politics.” The vast majority are, as you can imagine, utter nonsense.

Dominic Armato, voice of Monkey Island main character Guybrush Threepwood, also made some comments on Twitter about the whole situation. Many others also expressed support for Ron.

Return to Monkey Island is due on PC and Switch this year. Here’s the trailer that started this whole mess:
